Fountain of The Boat – Fontana Della Barcaccia

The Fontana della Barcaccia is one of the most famous Baroque-style fountains in Rome located at the base of the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna.

Designed like a half-sunken ship, with water spilling over its sides and into a small basin, it offers a breathtaking sight to capture.

The fountain is a work of art by Pietro and his son Bernini that was inspired by a boat that landed in the middle of the Piazza after the floods in the river Tiber.

Water slowly flows from seven points on the fountain, giving a lovely calming sound.

Fountain of The Four Rivers – Fontana Dei Quattro Fiumi

One of the most unmissable famous fountains in Rome is the Fountain of Four Rivers because of its splendid architecture and historical significance.

Located in the Piazza Navona, it was designed and constructed by Pietro Bernini in 1651.

It consists of a tall Egyptian-style obelisk surrounded by four Gods that stand in for the four continents where the Roman Catholic Church once held control.

Fountain of The Moor - La Fontana Del Moro

Dating back to the 16th century, La Fontana del Moro is amongst the most famous fountains in Rome located in Piazza Navona and is a wonderful place to unwind.

It was created by a team of artists under the direction of Giacomo della Porta, who carved the dolphins, dragons, and tritons.

The statue of the Moor was placed in its center when Pope Innocent X ordered its renovation in the middle of the 17th century.

The statues that you see now are copies of the originals, which were relocated to the Galleria Borghese in 1874 for restoration purposes.

The Maderno Fountain

The Maderno fountain, located on the north side of the Piazza, was created to replace an earlier fountain to beautify the area in front of St. Peter's Basilica.

Carlo Maderno renovated the earlier fountain by building a new octagonal foundation with a gigantic irregular basin ornamented with stairs and little columns.

The massive lower stone vasque of the earlier fountain was preserved, and four stone scrolls were added as embellishments to the pedestal above it.

After exploding from the top, the water flows downwards over the top of the upper vasque and creates a beautiful sight of sparkling droplets, enticing visitors and making it one of the most famous fountains in Rome.

Fountain of Neptune - Fontana Del Nettuno

Fontana del Nettuno is one of the most famous fountains in Rome that has long been used to provide water to city dwellers.

It was earlier known as the Fontana dei Calderari due to its location adjacent to an area housing blacksmith and metal workshops.

Giacomo Della Porta constructed this fountain in 1574 which provided water to the neighborhood for 300 years.

The fountain was embellished in the 19th century with the enormous statue of Neptune wrestling an octopus by Antonio Della Bitta and sculptures of the Cupids, walruses, and the Nereids by Gregorio Zappalà, making it more artistic and attractive.

The Bernini Fountain

One of the famous fountains in Rome, the Bernini fountain was set in the southern section of the St. Peter's Square, following a decade in which Pope Clement X hired Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create a second fountain that closely resembled the Maderno fountain.

A couple of the ornate patterns and the dolphins in the base, set this fountain apart from the original Maderno fountain.

The Roman fountain at Peterhof in Russia (1720) and the Fontaines de la Concorde in the Place de la Concorde in Paris (1840) were also designed after these Fountains of St. Peter's Square, establishing them as marvelous pieces of art.

The Big Fountain of The Janiculum - Fontana Dell’Acqua Paola

Constructed to mark the end of the Trajan Aqueduct, the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola is one of the largest fountains in Rome and a significant historical landmark.

The fountain sits above the large terrace overlooking the city and is reminiscent of the triumphal arch from ancient Rome.

The fountain has five archways, columns on either side, a massive pediment with a dedicatory inscription, and multiple dragons and eagles that add to its allure.

Additional decorative features that heighten the fountain's attractiveness include red and gray columns from St. Peter's Basilica, the Temple of Minerva, and the Roman Forum, as well as white and multicolored marble.

Fountain Of Moses - Fontana Dell’acqua Felice

The Fontana dell'Acqua Felice, a massive fountain in Rome's Quirinale district, marks the end of the Acqua Felice aqueduct, which was restored by Pope Sixtus V.

The presence of a massive Moses figure and angels holding the papal coat of arms brought a unique touch to the fountain, which was Rome's first new fountain since antiquity.

Water flows from the statues into basins with four lions spouting water, representing how the Catholic Church served the citizens of Rome at the time.

It also contributed to the transformation of the Quirinal neighborhood into a vibrant urban community by providing drinking water.

Fountain Of The Turtles - Fontana Delle Tartarughe

One of the most famous fountains in Rome associated with Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Fontana Delle Tartarughe is a spectacular sight to visit and spend some time with.

Designed in 1580 by Giacomo della Porta and Taddeo Landini, two renowned architects, it was renovated several times and Bernini’s turtles were added in 1658.

The centerpiece of cream marble with blue iridescence and the man figures riding dolphins holding it up are extremely impressive, and the small turtles are additional highlights.

The turtles on the real fountain are copies of the originals, which are stored in the Musei Capitolini due to the threat of theft.
