The capital of Meghalaya is set amidst high plateaus, waterfalls and meandering rivers showcasing their natural splendor. With many forests around the city giving rise to medicinal herbs and pine trees, the beautiful city is a treasure trove of nature. Shillong is also popularly called as the `Scotland of the East' for its beautiful climate and its location at nearly 1500 meters above the sea level.
A 3 hours’ drive from Assam’s capital city Guwahati through adventurous curves and thick pine groves reminds you that life sometimes is more about the journey than its destination. With many attractions in Shillong, starting right from the Omyam Lake which is also known as Burra Pani Lake everything there sets your mood for a lovely destination ahead. Omyam Literally translates into vast waters in the Khasi language. If you are a nature lover then the Elephant Falls Which are just 12 Km from the City would be a visual feast. Lady Hydari Park, a mini Zoo would a fun place for kids to see the Wildlife.
Created by the British as a summer destination, Shillong still flaunts its British style architecture and monuments. Like most hill stations Shillong too has its fair share of attractions. Some of the other attractions in the city include the Shillong peak, sweet falls and crinoline falls.
Shillong is well connected with other cities in the region such as Guwahati and Kolkata. Besides, there is good connectivity of roads to travel further into the north east. The best time to tour Shilling would be between the months of September to May.
