By Air

Shillong Airport or Umroi Airport is the nearest airport to reach Shillong. It is located in Umroi which is at a distance of approximately 30 kilometers from Shillong. It is a small regional airport and mainly connects Kolkata to Shillong, and flights options are limited.

Other nearby airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati which is just 120 kilometers away from Shillong. Guwahati is very well connected to various major cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Imphal, Silchar, etc. Also, Guwahati is the nearest international airport to Shillong. Flights from Bangkok, Paro, and Singapore are easily available.

After landing at the airport in Guwahati, one can easily get a bus or hire a cab to reach Shillong. Flying to Guwahati and then travelling to Shillong is the most recommended way to reach Shillong since the destination lies far away from central India and other means of transport take days.

By Train

The nearest railway station from Shillong is Guwahati Railway Station. It is at a distance of approximately 96 kilometers from Shillong. Guwahati is very well connected with other cities with via rail network. You can get direct trains to Guwahati from Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and even from Mumbai.

The frequency of the trains from Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai is high. If you are a budget traveller, railway is an ideal option for you. From the station, it is easy to hire a cab, share an economic cab or to get a bus for Shillong.

Road

Bus: Bus operators like Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) and Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) regularly regulate many buses from Guwahati to Shillong. A traveller can choose from the wide array of Volvo buses, sleeper buses deluxe as well as regular buses, depending upon their budget. It usually takes 3 hours to reach Shillong from Guwahati via a bus. It is recommended to take another means of transport till Guwahati and then take a bus to Shillong.

Car: There are many cabs that run between Guwahati and Shillong on a regular basis. For a more convenient and comfortable ride one can easily hire a taxi. For an economical ride, one can also opt for a shared cab. A 2.5 hour drive via NH40 will take you to the beautiful hill station Shillong. One can also drive easily from Tripura and Mizoram via NH44 to reach Shillong.

Bike: You can also choose to ride a bike to through the lush green valleys from Guwahati in order to reach Shillong. There are multiple bike rentals in Guwahati from where you can rent a bike and explore Shillong. This adventurous journey via NH40 will take you to Meghalaya via Nongpoh. You will also cross Mawlai, East Khasi Hills and Nongmynsong and reach Shillong. If you are an adventure loving person, we advise you to cover the scenic route between Guwahati and Shillong on bike.

Tara Sharma 3 day Meghalaya Trekking Tour

This trek has a beautiful trek path. This can be done at any season. A couple of years back, my friend went to this trek in the month of March, and he said it was good. However, I read that going in the month of June-October is the best time to go. But I went in September because of holiday constraints and it was awesome. I totally loved it. It is completely worthy.

Suma Kocchar Trekking in Shillong

Sanya Abbott Trekking in Shillong

A visit to Shillong was long due and I finally got it ticked last month with Thrillophilia’s package. My entire group really enjoyed the tour and the trekking experience to the Living Root Bridge was very amazing. We also hiked to Shillong Peak and the view was simply excellent. The hotels in which we were made to stay at Shillong and Cherrapunji were also very decent with sanitization done. The rooms were spacious and most importantly the bathroom was clean. The staff was also very kind to send us some late-night tea for our gossip sessions. We also received fresh and delicious meals every day of our trip which was again a bonus. Our entire group was so happy and we really made a lot of memories. Thanks to the whole team of Thrillophilia!!
