The Katong Antique House is one of the very few places in East Singapore where you can learn about the rich Peranakan culture. Owned by Mr. Peter Wee, a 4th generation Peranakan, the house is home to numerous displays of traditional Peranakan clothing, from the kebaya to Batik sarong and more, as well as antique furniture and crockeries, among other things.

Spread across two storeys, the Katong Antique House is part shop and part museum, and on your visit here, you can even get a chance to enjoy a tour by Mr. Wee himself, who will not only take you through the remarkable collection of Peranakan antiques and artefacts, but also share many historical and cultural facts and trivia with you.

During your tour of the temple, you will come across four granite structures depicting Lord Ganesha in 32 different poses here, all of which are said to have been built by 20 Indian artisans who spent two decades working on these masterpieces. The temple also boasts of large, opulent doorways, which were built in a way that former kings could enter it whilst sitting on elephants. You can also see the roof topped by a dragon and images of many different deities in this temple.

Tucked in the heart of Joo Chiat in Tembeling Road, the temple is dedicated to Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, and doubles up as a spiritual place for the Buddhists, and those who practise Taoism and Confucianism. With coconut groves surrounding it, the temple has a very peaceful and tranquil ambience. The fragrance of incense and the soft hum of prayers here add to the temple’s charm.

However, it is its unique style of architecture which sets the temple apart from other places of worship. The exteriors and the doors of the temple are embellished, and fringed with spherical windows, while you can see idols of the Sun and Moon gods and Confucius in the interior.
