Bagdogra to Gangtok Travel Guide

Gangtok is seated almost north to Bagdogra. If you’re planning to reach Gangtok by car, bus, or bike, here is a detailed route map to follow.

1. Head north on NH27, and towards NH327
2. Turn Right at Panchmukhi Air & Train Ambulance Services Pvt. Ltf, and stay on NH27. Drive past Gravity Institute on your left.
3. From the Shiv Mandiv, continue driving on NH10. Drive past Matigaraha to Siliguri Way.
4. Turn left at the Traffic Point on stay on NH10. Drive past Hotel Avanti on your left.
5. Turn right at Shambhavi Collection Ranipool Bazaar
6. Turn right
7. Turn right
8. Turn left at Royal Public School
9. Take a sharp left
10. Turn left onto Santujit Rai Road
11. Take another sharp left
12. Turn left
13. Continue onto Bhusuk Road

-Summer Season

The summer season in Gangtok extends from May to June-July, with relatively warm and pleasant weather. This is also when a lot of tourists are seen flocking here in search of respite from heat, so expect it to get a little crowded. If you are planning a vacation than it is the best time to visit in Gangtok. The best places to visit in Gangtok during summers are the North Sikkim and West Sikkim, which are only accessible during these months. Nights do get considerably cooler, though, but overall the weather is welcoming. Expect daily bouts of warm sunlight coupled with cool mountain breeze - a blissful combination.

-Winter Season

Winters in Gangtok start from October and last up to March. The weather is extremely cold, with average daytime temperatures ranging somewhere between 5 to 8 degrees celsius, while nights see a drastic dip to about 3 to 4 degrees. The possibility of snow is also quite high, and there are various snow adventures to be had. On a clear day, you can feast your eyes on the views of the snow capped Himalayan giants. The weather, albeit quite chilly, is pleasant and enjoyable with a healthy dose of sunlight in the afternoon. Winters are also the time for some of the most famous festivals of Gangtok.

-Monsoon Season

If you’re travelling from Bagdogra to Gangtok by road, there are plenty of private and shared taxis, and buses available right near the airport. The drive takes about 4 - 5 hours, generally. It is advisable to opt for a Sikkim state registered vehicle instead of a West Bengal state registered vehicle to avoid the hassles of transferring to another vehicle at Deorali to get to Gangtok. 

The Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) offers state operated bus services from Siliguri to Gangtok, and will drop you off at Deorali, from where a state registered taxi must be hired.

The drive from Bagdogra to Gangtok takes about 4 - 5 hours. There are Bengal state registered vehicles as well as Sikkim state registered vehicles available to take you to Gangtok. But the former will leave you at Deorali, from where a Sikkim state registered vehicle must be hired. So, prefer a Sikkim state registered vehicle from Bagdogra itself.

Private taxis from Bagdogra to Gangtok cost about INR 3,000 for a small one, and INR 3,500 for a large one. A shared jeep can accommodate 10 people on a per head basis, and may be preferable if you’re travelling solo. The cost per head comes up to about INR 200.

Bagdogra is the nearest airport to Gangtok, at a distance of about 125 km. The airport is well connected to other major cities of the country like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, and Kolkata, with a good frequency of flights. It is also well connected to neighbouring foreign countries like Bhutan. There’s also a helicopter facility available from Bagdogra to Gangtok, and takes about 20 minutes only. This service is offered by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation. From Bagdogra airport, you can hire private or shared cabs to take you to Gangtok, making for a 4 - 5 hours drive.
