Salford Cathedral Overview

Salford Cathedral, often referred to as the Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist, is a Catholic cathedral located on Chapel Street in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. It is a Grade II* listed structure that serves as the main church of the Salford Diocese and the residence of the Salford Bishop.

For the numerous Catholics in the diocese, Salford Cathedral is a significant site of worship. Its design was influenced by cathedrals found on the Continent and in England.

Hadfield considered the West Front and Nave at Howden Church in Yorkshire. Bishop Nicholas Wiseman delivered a 90-minute sermon, and Bishop George Brown sang the solemn high mass to inaugurate it on August 9th, 1848. It was given the status of a cathedral in 1852 with the Restoration of the Catholic Hierarchy. Since then, St. John's Cathedral, which is also a vibrant parish, has been the focal point of hundreds of diocese celebrations.
