Stony Stratford Overview

The town of Stony Stratford is one of the most prime historic locations listed amongst the important tourist attractions in Milton Keynes. The place is full of amazing options to explore, stay, relax and dine.

Stony Stratford is a historic market town which is located on the important route from London to Chester on the road of Watling Street. The market characteristic of the town dates back to 1194 but it attained the status of town in 1215. The literal meaning of the town is “stony ford on a Roman road”.

The town had some famous hotels like the former Rose and Crown Inn where reportedly in 1483 the newly appointed boyking Edward V had stayed for a while. In present times the inn has been turned into a private house but the engravings on the front walls proudly commemorates the events.

In 1513, Catherine of Aragon had made a visit to Stony Stratford to address the army which had assembled there for the battle of Flodden. Because of its strategic position and prime location on the route to Ireland via Chester, the town became a very resting place during the 17th and 18th centuries and flourished gradually. There are some great dining options in the town like the French Affaire and Calcutta Brasserie which you shouldn’t miss visiting at any cost.
