Inverness Castle Overview

One of the top tourist places to visit in Inverness is the Inverness castle which is located on a beautiful cliff overlooking the beautiful River Ness. It is known that the castle was built by Malcolm - Máel Coluim III of Scotland who destroyed the previous castle located on the cliff.

The castle is made up of red sandstone and displays a castellated style and you can see the remains of its original bastion wall. The castle today serves as the Sheriff’s Court but was originally built as a prison.

The castle was constructed in the 11th century, and the original castle was destroyed by the Jacobites in 1746. The neo-Norman castle you see today was constructed in 1836 and was designed by architect William Burn. You can also look at the brass statue of Jacobite Flora MacDonald on the grounds in front of the castle who helped Prince Charles Edward escape from the Hanoverian forces after the Battle of Culloden. The castle today is owned by the Highland council, who helped in restoring the castle for visitor attraction.
