Clava Cairns Overview

Just Six miles from Inverness, the Clava Cairns is known to be a mysterious sight with an amazing collection of standings stones, and stone circles that were used as gravesites in Scotland. The site has magnificent remains of an ancient cemetery, set on a terrace above the River Nairn. The Clava Cairns are known to be about 4,000 years old and were built to bury the dead.

One of the most exciting places to see in Inverness, the Clava Cairns is a well-preserved group of prehistoric burial cairns that were built about 4,000 years ago. The cemetery is known to have many passage graves, large standing stones, eerie stone circles that encompass the graves, and also the remains of a chapel. The Clava Cairns is known to be built in 2000 BC and was used for more than a thousand years.

You can visit both the sections of the place, Balnauran of Clava, and Milton of Clava. The Balnauran of Clava is the main section with three large burial cairns surrounded by a stone circle.

The second section is adjacent to the main section and is smaller, consisting of a single standings tone and the ruins of a medieval chapel.
