Quite naturally, you do not get to witness a thousand lakes on this trek, but the expedition does give you a chance to explore some of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the country with crystal clear waters.
The natural wonders en route in the form of gurgling water streams, high altitude lakes, alpine vegetation, velvety meadows, and the mighty Himalayas come together to make Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek Bhutan is an adventure for lifetime.
Not only the trek features some of the most beautiful Himalayan camp sites and showers participants with endless photograph opportunities, but it also lets you find solace and discover your soul in the tranquillity of unblemished nature.
Day 01: Bagdogra – Phuentsholing (160 kms) ()
Day Highlights: Drive 3 hrs, Arrival at Bagdogra, Drive to Phuentsholing
Day Details: Today, you will make the beginning of a splendid trip by arriving the Bagdogra Airport. After being greeted by a local guide, you will be driven down to Phuentsholing, the second largest town in Bhutan. With a distance of about 160km to cover, the drive will last about 3 hours. Check into your hotel and freshen up. The rest of the evening is for you to relax and unwind.
Day 02: Phuentsholing – Thimphu (155 kms)
Day Highlights: 4.5 hrs drive , Thimphu, Leisure Day
Day Details: Today, you will travel to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. A distance of 155kms that will take about 4.5 hours to cover. On arrival, check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is for you to spend at your leisure. Head out into the city to get a feel of the local taste, culture and lifestyle. Overnight at a comfortable hotel.
Day 03: Thimphu – Genekha (2950m) (Trek/5 hrs)
Day Highlights: Rough Trails, Suspension Bridge, Camping.
Day Details: The first day of your trek begins with a 14km long walk through rough trails that will bring you to Genekha Primary School. After a brief halt for lunch here, resume your trek for another two hours, following which you will reach the Suspension Bridge. Famous as the spot for a gathering of the Matshutake mushrooms, this site will be where we are going to camp tonight. The rest of the evening is you to explore the neighbouring regions at leisure.
Day 04: Genekha – Gur (3350m)
Day Highlights: 6 hrs Trek Cross Suspension bridge, Steep Trails, Valley Views.
Day Details: Begin the day by crossing the Suspension Bridge! Once done, the trail gets steep and requires considerable amount of effort. Enjoy the views around as you make your way up rough terrains and trails. Relish the packed lunch on the way and set forth on your trek again. You will be passing through a dense forest to reach to the campsite for the day, which is located in a small clearing .
Day 05: Trekking from Gur – Labatama (4300m)
Day Highlights: 6 hrs Trek, Steep trails, Dagala Range, Yak country, Yum Tsho.
Day Details: Today is going to be a challenging trek marked by long and steep trails. As you arrive at the pass, witness the stunning beauty of the entire Dagala Range. Going ahead you will enter the Yak country, through which the rest of the day’s trek will pass and will be marked by several meadows and Yak herding camps. We will set up camps by the Yum Tsho, a pretty lake at an altitude of 4300m.
Day 06: Explore Labatama
Day Highlights: Trek to Amu Jomo(optiona), Lake Views, Fishing.
Day Details: Today is a day of relaxation and exploration. Venture out and take notice of the neighbouring regions and lakes. Those that are up to it can head for a climb to the Amu Jomo, the largest mount in the area. An unmatched and unparalleled view awaits you if you choose to take up this trail. Alternatively, you could visit some of the lakes that form the landscape around and maybe even indulge in fishing! Overnight at camps by the Yum Tsho River.
Day 07: Labatama – Jaduna (4100m) (Trek/6-7 hrs)
Day Highlights: Jomigue La Pass, alpine meadows, Jaduna, Camping.
Day Details: Different landscapes and vegetation greet you across different trails as you set out for Jaduna. Today’s trek will last 14kms and will be covered in an approximate time of 6-7 hrs. The first phase of the trek will take you to the Jomigue La Pass that is at an altitude of 4460m! This pass will allow you to take a look at some of the mountains of Northern Bhutan as well, a sight that is to behold and savour. The rest of the trail will take you through glorious alpine plantations. Overnight camping at Jaduna.
Day 08: Trek from Jaduna – Japhuna (3800m) ()
Day Highlights: 6 hrs Trek ,Lakes, Rhododendron Forests, Camping.
Day Details: From Jaduna, you will begin a descent with heading to Japhuna that is at an altitude of 3800m. Mostly downward, the trails very occasionally call for an easy ascent. Lakes and rhododendron forests fill up your trail route to the experience all the more enticing and beautiful. You will camp tonight at Japhuna, right in the midst of a shunted forest.
Day 09: Trekking from Japhuna – Talekha (2925m)
Day Highlights: 5-6 hrs Trek, Conifer Forests, Talekha Monastery, Camping.
Day Details: A 14km trek today is marked by steep descent – one that may be hard on your knees. Take care and be careful as you trek down charming coniferous forests and lush green sceneries. Your destination today will be Talekha at an altitude of 2925m, where you will set up camps beside the Talekha Monastery. Spend the evening at leisure.
Day 10: Trekking from Talekha and drive from Talekha to Thimphu
Day Highlights: 3 hour trek, Drive to Thimphu
Day Details: Today is the shortest trek and the last day of your trek for this journey. Leave from Talekha on a 3 hour downward trek to a specified point. A vehicle will transfer you to Thimphu, where you have the rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight at hotel at Thimphu.
Day 11: Thimphu – Bagdogra (310 kms) (Drive/7 hrs)
Day Highlights: Bagdogra
Day Details: Pre-arranged vehicles will drive you to Bagdogra that is at a distance of 310kms and will be covered over approximately 7 hours. Rest of the evening is at leisure for you to enjoy. Overnight at a local hotel.
Day 12: Depart from Bagdogra.
Day Highlights: Your journey ends today.
Day Details: Depart from Bagdogra on your onward journey after a trip to the most remote and beautiful places in the world.
