What is Plastination?

Plastination is a ground-breaking method invented by scientist and anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens in the year 1977. In this method, the decomposition of human bodies is stopped, to preserve the anatomical specimens of the body for medical education and other scientific purposes. The process of plastination involves the extraction of all the bodily fluids and soluble fat from the human body.

Once everything is extracted, the fluids are then replaced with vacuum-forced impregnation, using reactive resins and elastomers (or polymers like silicone or polyester). This is done to produce a dry and durable specimen. In Body Worlds Amsterdam, you can see more than 200 such plastinated specimens made from real human bodies. However, it is not allowed to touch the exhibited bodies here.
