Wakefield Castle Overview

Also known as Wakefield Lowe Hill or Lawe Hill, this castle was built in the 12th century by the Earl of Surrey William de Warren. The castle is a stunning fortification of timber moat and bailey, unlike other castles which were constructed from stones. Today the castle stands tall as a heavily wooded state and offers the visitors impressive views of the surroundings.

The Wakefield castle was built not as a stone fortification but by earth and timber moat and bailey had River Calder which was the major waterway of that area. Today the castle rules do not provide much to do but give a deep insight into how this area was once of significance to take control over the nearby region.

The surroundings are heavily wooded and provide visitors with very beautiful scenery and national landscape to enjoy during the tour. Some of the surviving earthworks from the castle are located in Clarence park and have access to the public.
