Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin Overview

The chapel of Saint Mary the virgin is one of the most well-known and popular places to visit in Wakefield. The base of the chapel still has the original stone work whereas the upper part went through some reconstruction from 1847 and 1848.

The chapel of Saint Mary the virgin is one of the only four surviving Bridge chapels that was built in England during the 13th century. Dating back to 1356 this is one of the finest examples of a Bridge Chapel, which was constructed on a small island by the side of the river calendar.

The chapel, which is among the Grade I listed buildings, also offers a stunning view of nine other bridges that were completed the same year as it. The stunning building features five amazing carved panels that represent the annunciation, nativity, resurrection, ascension and the descent of the Holy Ghost. While visitors are allowed inside only on special occasions, those who get the chance will definitely love the stained glass windows and its beautiful spiral staircase.
