Theatre Royal Overview

Built in 1894 the Theatre Royal shows a variety of plays, dramas, dance and even comedy shows throughout its annual schedule. Also known as the Theatre Royal and Opera, the building was closed in the 1920s because of an oncoming cinematic competition. In 1981 the city council brought it back for its original purpose and it was reopened as the original name.

The Theatre Royal, a theatrical masterpiece that was designed by Victorian architect Frank Matcham and opened in the year 1894 is a jewel in Wakefield's crown. Located in the center of the city this is an intimate and one of his smallest creations as a renowned architect. The theatre's year-round program includes amazing plays, musical shows, comedy stand-ups, and much more. At the current times, the creative director of theatre Royal is award-winning and nominated writer John Godber.
