Swansea Castle Overview

Once a huge fortress is now a modern-day city center and what's left of the Swansea castle is one of the top tourist attractions in Swansea. The Castle was built in the early 12th century and the remains that you can have a look at go back to the late 13th and 14th centuries.

Founded by Henry de Beaumont in 1107, the Swansea castle is located on the eastern side of the city center. The castle was built to maintain peace and order in the Gower Peninsula and keep an eye on any attacks from the sea. The Original castle was a sub-rectangular enclosure that overlooked the beautiful river Tawe on the east. The castle then was attacked several times and it fell in 1217 and was restored to the English in 1220.

The only visible remains, you can look at is the southeast corner of the new castle which was built in the late 13th century or the 14th century, and the south face is capped with arcades at the wall head. One of the most prominent features of the castle is the arcaded parapet on the south block which is very similar to the bishop's palaces at St David's and Lamphey.
