About Museum Jorge Rando

The Museum Jorge Rando (Museo Jorge Rando), a relative newcomer to Málaga's art scene, debuted there in 2015, taking up residence in the former cloister of the Monasterio de las Mercedarias, which was built in the 1870s.

It took five years to transform the cloister into a clever art space, and today the gallery serves as a permanent display of the strong, fluid works of Expressionist painter Jorge Rando as well as a studio for regional artists, a cultural centre, and a research institution. Born in Málaga in 1941, Rando's enormous canvases are magnificently displayed in four gleaming white galleries that are illuminated from above by skylights.

Temporary exhibitions of other Expressionists' work, including sculpture by Ernst Barlach, alternate with his paintings around every six months. A life-size, shocking-pink sculpture of a pregnant lady and an old orange tree that was planted by the founder of the monastery in the museum's modest central courtyard serve as its focal points.

In addition to providing free guided tours, the museum also hosts talks, arty films, and opportunities to visit the artists' studios.
