Alcazaba Overview

Take a guided tour of the Alcazaba, an 11th-century citadel, to learn about its history and admire its exquisite Al-Andalus architecture. This fortress, which sits at the base of Mount Gibralfaro, is attractive because of its historic arches, patios, lovely Mozarabic water features, and well-kept gardens. You will be astounded by the stunning views over the city and port from its peak.

This mediaeval Moorish fortress, which served as a stronghold for the Kingdom of Granada, was constructed in the 11th century on the site of a former Roman bulwark and later rebuilt. For several hundred years, this castle served as the capital of the town's Muslim rulers. The fortified palace was built with three circuits of defence walls and once had 110 major towers in addition to several smaller turrets. It was strategically located on the Monte de Gibralfaro. Visitors may view some of the remaining towers, including the spectacular Torre del Homenaje, the Torre de la Vela, and the Arco de Cristo entryway (tower).

The Nasrid-era Alcazaba de Málaga is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture with exquisitely detailed ornamentation and lovely surroundings. There are lovely terraced garden courtyards with cool fountains and ornamental swimming pools. Sea views can be seen from a few of the outdoor viewing points. The Teatro Romano, the remains of a historic Roman theatre built during the reign of emperor Augustus, can be found next to the Alcazaba on the western slope of Mount Gibralfaro. There are occasionally theatrical performances done outside.
