The Palacio de la Aduana Overview

The late 18th-century structure known as the Palacio de la Aduana de Málaga (Customs Palace) was initially constructed as a customs facility for Málaga Port. The former Malacitana Museums of Fine Arts and Archaeology's collections are now displayed there as part of the Malaga Museum. The building is a well-known landmark in Malaga and the best example of neoclassicism in the city.

One of four towering government structures that dominate the northern side of the Paseo del Parque (boulevard and gardens) and stand between it and the Alcazaba's perpendicular hill are the Palacio de la Aduana (Customs Palace). The Bank of Spain, Málaga University, and the town hall are the additional structures.

Its name reflects that it was formerly a customs building for the Málaga Port. This massive neoclassical structure, which was modelled after Italian Renaissance palaces, was put into construction in 1791. The building was under construction when it was looted by the French during the Peninsular War in 1810, and it wasn't finished until 1829. The structure was used as the Real Fábrica de Tabaco when the Paseo del Parque and the current harbour were built on reclaimed ground towards the end of the 19th century (Royal Tobacco Factory).

A fire that occurred in 1922 severely damaged it and claimed the lives of 28 government workers who were housed on the top level. The provincial delegation of the national government was back in Málaga following the civil war.
