Makalidurga is a small village that is mostly known for the Makalidurga hill. You can reach this place very easily as it is only 60 km away from Bangalore and 10 km away from Doddaballapur. There is an old temple of Lord Shiva in this village which is believed to be the place where Rishi Markandeya performed penance. Apart from this, the city is very famous for its trekking trails over a set of beautiful rolling hills. The Makalidurga Fort is located on top of one of the granite hillocks and trek along this hillside is one of the most popular one in this region.
The Fort on the top is at a height of 1,117 m. You can visit other attractions, such as Ghati Subramanya Temple, Grover Zampa Vineyards, Chikka Madhure Shani Mahatma Temple, Kinvah Vineyards. Popular amongst trekkers the Village itself serves as a base for these treks and there are many day treks as well as night treks organized here.You can also indulge in bike rides to reach the top of some hills.
The best time to visit Makalidurga is in the winter months between October to March. This is also the best time to trek, as the roads and trails are dry and make it easy to trek. Do not visit the place in monsoon if you want to trek as the rocks and the roads get slippery and it can be dangerous to trek in the weather. Also, Due to heavy rains, blockage of roads and rock brakes is very common.
