Legion of Honor Overview

The Legion of Honor is located in San Francisco and is a beautiful museum with an impressive collection of 5,000 years of ancient and European art. Situated in a marvellous setting overlooking the Pacific and the Golden Gate Bridge, the museum commemorates 3600 Californian soldiers who died in World War I. Opened in 1924, the Legion of Honor features European painting, sculpture, and decorative arts, as well as ancient art, graphic arts, and contemporary art. The museum is housed inside a Beaux-arts building located in San Francisco's Lincoln Park and has some well-known works of art by famous artists.

Visit the museum and take a look at 124,000 works of art which include European decorative arts, sculpture and painting. Standing out amongst them is the famous The Thinker by Rodin. While exploring the place you will find ancient art from the Mediterranean and the Near East. The museum also boasts having the largest collection of prints and drawings in the country.

By Car: Legion of Honor is located 5.3 mi from the city centre, it will take 17 min via the Geary Blvd route.


By Bus: Take a bus to the Legion Of Honor bus station in front of the museum. You can reach the activity location from the bus station with a 1-minute walk

Best Time To Visit

The Legion of Honor is open throughout the year from 9:30 am to 5:15 pm except on Mondays and select holidays. 

Best season: The best season to visit The Legion of Honor is during fall, from September to November when the weather is mild and enjoyable. 

Best day of the week: The best day of the week to visit the museum is during the weekdays from Tuesdays to Fridays when the place is less crowded.

Best time of day: The best time of the day to visit the Legion of Honor is just after its opening or later in the afternoon towards closing time.

Other Essential Information

  • General admission is free for all on the first Tuesday of every month.
  • You can carry standard-size backpacks and other smaller bags but for bigger bags and backpacks, you will need to keep them in the coat check.
  • Although standard-size strollers are allowed, they are restricted at some exhibitions.
  • You will be able to have only food and beverages purchased in the cafes inside the cafe and its adjoining terraces.
  • You can only take along service and support animals but not other pets.
  • Please maintain a gap of at least 18 inches with the artwork.
  • Smartphones and small handheld cameras are allowed to capture still photos and short videos for personal use without using tripods, selfie sticks and flashes.

Any history enthusiast can tell you that this museum is a fantastic place to witness some of the most exquisite works of art by some of the greatest masters. The vast collection here by artists like Rubens, Degas, and Monet had us completely stupefied.
