The real name of the Great Sufi saint Dastgeer Sahib was kept after Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani, who was born in Jeelan, Persia, in 1077 CE. Known for his spiritual teachings, he founded the Sufi organisation Qadiriyya.
The saint never went to Kashmir, but his spiritual influence has touched many people there, making the Urs an important event every year.
The Qadiriyya is a Sunni Sufi order (Tariqa) that was established by Hanbali scholar Abdul Qadir Gilani (1077–1166, also known as Jilani) of Gilan, Iran.
The Dastgeer Sahib Shrine was established in the eighteenth century. It was constructed during the Afghan occupation of Kashmir in 1806 by Syed Buzargh Shah, a local priest. Locals of the area believe that the relics inside the shrine of Abdul Qadir Gilani belong to the same saint.
Ghous-e-Azam, also known as Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani, was a Sufi saint who started the Qadiriyya sect of Sufism. Another name for him was Peeran-e-Peer.
