Central Market Atarazanas Overview

The Central Market Atarazanas, one of Malaga's architectural wonders, is a fantastic location to try local cuisine and learn about local traditions. Fresh, inexpensive local produce, seafood, pork, and cheese are available for purchase here. The market, which is always crowded until the afternoon, features Moorish architecture from the 14th century and 19th-century industrial design.

The Mercado de Atarazanas is accessible from the Alameda via side streets in the north. Even the entrance alone is worth seeing. The sole remaining piece of the former Moorish shipyard is a 14th-century Islamic doorway with a horseshoe design. The actual market hall was built in the 19th century. The structure had a comprehensive renovation in the 1970s after being abandoned for a long time.

Visitors can find a bustling scene of merchants offering fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, and cheese at this roomy market building. The market is at its liveliest in the morning when the freshly caught fish arrives. Later in the day, it's fun to sample pescato (fried fish) and other specialties in the market's tapas bars.

The stained-glass window that features Málaga's famous sites is the interior's standout feature. The Calle Marqués de Larios, a street dotted with numerous apparel stores, jewellery boutiques, shoe stores, candy shops, and cafés, is another location for shopping and eating a few blocks away.
