Plan a short day trip to the Beauchief Abbey and the Ancient Woodlands nearby, which have been in operation since the 12th century, and are amongst the oldest monuments in the region. Beauchief Abbey is one of the most serene places to visit in Sheffield, and has been constructed combining the remnants of an ancient abbey from the mid-12th century and a 17th century chapel. Known for its historical, cultural and religious significance, this abbey is also the site of guided tours and regular workshop services, in addition to religious events and other programmes.
Located in close proximity to the Abbey are the ancient woodlands of Parkbank Wood, Old Park Wood and Ladies Spring Wood. These woodlands are quite verdant in greenery, and serve as home to a wide variety of birds, including many rare species of woodpeckers, thereby serving as perfect spots to indulge in some birdwatching. After a visit to the Beauchief Abbey, you can also set out for a hike in the natural trails within these woodlands, which boast of many well-parked footpaths and trails.
