Popularly known as the Rohtang tunnel, the Atal Tunnel is a highway tunnel named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee- the former Prime Minister of India. This is a tunnel built under the Rohtang pass and is on the national Highway 3. Located in Himachal Pradesh, the Atal Tunnel is a single tunnel that aims to cut down travel time between Manali and Keylong.
The tunnel is totally 9 kilometres long and is at an altitude as high as almost 4000 metres. The tunnel comes alive with people actively using it to travel from Manali to Leh and during the winter time, the tunnel is closed due to climatic factors. Overall, the time taken to travel through this tunnel can go up to 45 minutes and is way less than the actual two to even three hours.
