How Priyanka Triumphed Her Solo Bike journey to Ladakh
Quick Jumplinks to Navigate
There exist two types of people in the world – One who dream to travel and others who don’t. Chances are, you’ll rather bump into people belonging to the former category more often. Moreover, if you are the one who dreams to travel and are fortunately making that happen, godspeed to you. But for most of us, we find ourselves tangled in the hustle that is “Life”. Priorities set our days, days set our months and the travel plan we make for the end of the year gets replaced by the next year’s priorities.
If reading this loud disheartens you, then worry not. We have got a perfect travel story to inspire you for your next travel adventure.
Priyanka Nag, a girl next door, working a full-time day job also had the same dream of traveling to places. She wanted a break from her monotonous life, but the workload made it difficult for her to plan a trip soon. Time passed by and her travel plans kept on becoming a part of her postponed plans. Sometimes it was her priorities and the other times, the friends postponed the plan. But then something clicked and Priyanka decided to do something out of the box.
Getting to the Travel Plan – The Land of High Passes
It was a warm sunny day when she decided to take a step, a daring step. A step she could have never taken but proved to be miraculous for her.
Priyanka decided to travel solo.
Well, if you are an Indian or are aware of how women travelers, let alone solo, have to face resistance pursuing their travel feats, you’ll agree it was indeed daring. But Priyanka, she did not budge.
She went ahead, browsed locations to travel, numerous packages offering services and decided to take on the mighty Leh-Ladakh Bike Trip in the summer of July 2017.

First time solo, women traveling alone, with strangers, on a bike trip, to Ladakh! WHAT!!??
Well, everyone around Priyanka had something to say about that. Many praised her but most of them asked her to rethink her decision. It went to the phase where days before the scheduled trip, she herself had second thoughts. But in the words of Jeniffer Lee –
“Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire”
Priyanka decided to take on the challenge.

The Leh-Ladakh Bike Thrill Begins
On 24th July 2017, she began her solo biking trip with a bunch of bikers to the magnificent Land of the High Passes – Ladakh.
Now, if you dream of traveling, we bet you know about Leh-Ladakh. A region that is in everyone’s travel bucket list and a region that falls short of words to praise, Ladakh is a beautiful tranquil travel destination that soothes your soul as soon as you reach there. It is like a marvel on the Earth by the Gods.
Priyanka chose to take the trip with Thrillophila’s famous ‘Bike Trip To Leh Ladakh For 10 Days‘ package where she was a pillion rider with a group of unknown folks, who later became her best pool of friends.
She recalls, “I had gone to this trip solo but little did I know, that I’ll come back making a group of people who are as crazy as me.”

The package included the ride through Leh, Rohtang Pass, Khardung La Pass, Ladakh, Nubra valley and Pangong lake. The group that Priyanka was part of followed a different route viz. Manali – Rohtang Pass – Koksar – Keylong – Jispa – Darcha – Sarchu- Leh. They also visited popular places like Nubra, Pangong, and Spangmik. Riding through the magnificent passes of the Leh region is indeed a heavenly feeling.
Burning the rubber through the curvy stretches, in her words – “What can be a better choice than biking through difficult mountain roads. We started from the lush greens of Manali and landed in the mountain desert of Leh. The whole tour was like living through some dream!”.
“Living the Dream” Itinerary
The first part of the trip itinerary was a team introduction with the fellow travellers where Priyanka interacted with the group. Sharing pleasantries, they started their ride to Leh crossing the green valleys, snow-covered mountains, high passes of the region and thrilling terrains.
If you are a biker, you may know how it would feel like to experience such scenery, as the cool breeze hits your face and the pounding of your heart can be heard over the sound of the engine.
Priyanka, raised in the urban spirit, had to even make a few adjustments to take this trip. But that did not stop the traveler in her. From making camps to attending nature’s call in a jiffy, everything was worth the trip. She still chuckles when she remembers the log of stuff she did on the trip. Well, we’ve all been there!
We asked her to sum up the whole journey in one line and in a quick revert she says, “I can still feel the wind in my hair and the feeling like I’m flying”. That’s how Ladakh woos you with its mystical land.
The itinerary included all the thrill of the regions including scaling the Rohtang Pass that is at a height of 3790 M (one of the highest road points and gateway to Lahaul and Spiti valleys), riding to BaraLacha Pass (1620 Ft) and Sarchu which is the midpoint of Manali-Leh route and lastly mapping the curves of one of the highest motorable road of the world, KhardungLa Pass.

That’s the best thing about Ladakh, it offers everything to its visitors no matter what type of traveller you are. If you are an experiential traveller, Ladakh will offer you with scenic beauty and plenty of adventure activities. If you like bike ride journeys, Ladakh offers you with marvellous landscapes and tough roads that you will be proud of overcoming.
Magnificent mountain passes, high peaks, amazing weather, beautiful monasteries, colorful festivals, generous localities – Ladakh is the perfect travel destination. No day in Ladakh is the same as you have tons of stuff to explore or see.
The Success of a Travel is in Preparations
It reads all fun and motivating but be aware that Priyanka did not just flip a switch and went ahead for her Leh-Ladakh bike trip. Much went into preparation, both physical and mental. The high altitudes of the Leh-Ladakh region are a challenge for most of the folks who visit there. Proper breathing exercises, mental preparation and collecting the essential gears is one part of the journey.
Priyanka also has a 5-pointer guide which is really helpful from a first-timer solo traveler perspective:
- It’s totally safe for a solo female traveller. If you really want to do it, don’t think twice.
- Altitude sickness is normal. You should not panic in instances of slight headaches on your initial days. Just follow the instructions on your trip leader.
- If you are a first-time solo nomad, stay with the group at all times. No matter how adventurous you are, don’t leave the group and do not try to ride alone.
- Photography is surely fun but usually, you’ll pause after a few days in the region. For all the right reasons, you’ll want to live the moment more than capturing it through your lens.
- Be flexible and ready to get out of your comfort zone. Trips like these are not really vacations. There will be tough times but the truth is, those tough times will end up becoming your best memories.
If you have come so far reading about Priyanka’s ‘daring’ journey, we are sure you have a travellers soul in you. If so, do yourself a favor and plan a trip to Ladakh this summer.
“I earn to travel”, Priyanka mentioned and when we asked about her next travel plan, she promptly answered, “Mt. Everest Base Camp”.
