It Was Ladakh That Lay Beyond Her Exams – Rithika in Ladakh
Quick Jumplinks to Navigate
“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
If you are a traveller, you will relate to these words by Ibn Battuta. Travelling is a means of exploration to some and introspection to some. But, there are also people who use travelling as the driving force to motivate themselves to prepare well for their examinations. Such is the case of the narrator of this travel story, a final year medical student from Hyderabad, Rithika Vemuri. She would tell herself everyday, “I must prepare well because if I clear all the exams, I will be travelling to Ladakh.”
Rithika and her two cousins, who share a great bonding, had waited for long to take the dream trip to Ladakh together. Like almost anybody in India, Ladakh was on Rithika’s bucket list. It was not easy for Rithika and her cousins to convince their parents to allow them to take the “all girls” trip. After long discussions and lots of reassurances, they got the green signal and booked a bike trip to Ladakh with Thrillophilia. From the date of booking to the date of journey, excitement and daydreaming filled her mind. It was hard to wait to see Ladakh.
Here comes the exciting account of Rithika’s Ladakh bike trip!
Leh Part I
Rithika tells us, “We were on a flight from Delhi to Leh when I looked outside our plane’s windowand found the beautiful green valleys and snow-clad mountain ranges adorning the landscape. For a moment, I could not believe my eyes. That moment filled me with excitement because if the beginning was so beautiful, I had no idea how great the rest of our trip was going to be.”
Rithika and her cousins landed in Leh and were transferred to their hotel. There, Thrillophilia Representative, Tarunmet them and introduced all the 17 people taking the trip to each other. He alsobriefed them about the journey and gave them a set of instructions as to the things they should do and the things they should not do on their trip. They spent rest of the day acclimatizing and dreaming about the journey that lay ahead of them.
Rithika describes second day of the trip as, “Excitedly, we left to explore the city of Leh and the nearby spots the following day. We enjoyed exploring the rich cultural heritage of Leh by visiting Leh Palace and Hall of Fame Museum. But what followed was the most exciting part of the day – we visited the Magnetic Hill (the hill that defies the law of gravity) and Sangam (the point where Indus and Zanskar rivers meet). The trip so far was going far more better than the way we had anticipated. I was already in love with Ladakh!”

Off to Nubra
It was time for Rithika to brace herself for the real thrill of Ladakh bike trip. It was time to ride from Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La. It seemed like a pleasant morning when they set off. The views of the picturesque valleys and snow-capped mountains entertained her senses as they rode through the high elevation roads. As unexpected weather is iconic to the character of Ladakh, soon, they were surrounded by clouds and it started to rain, making the ride challenging. Not much time had passed when the rainfall was replaced by snowfall. Although it made things tougher for them, they were delighted to experience what they were experiencing. Rithika welcomed the snow with a smile and moved ahead – towards Nubra, passing the hurdles.
Impressed by the scenic landscapes of the Nubra Valley, Rithika tells us, “Nubra Valley is uniquely beautiful. Being in that place, standing upon the sandy terrain, staring at the surrounding mountains was just breathtaking.”
Rithika, along with her cousins and the fellow travellers, whom she had become friends with by now, enjoyed every moment of her stay in Nubra Valley by dancing and singing around the bonfire. They also shared interesting paranormal experiences in the dark of night, before they retired in their tents to rejuvenate their spirits for the next day.

Leh Again!
“So long,” said Rithika to Nubra Valley and set off to ride back to Leh. En route to Leh, she questioned her lifestyle and wished she could just give up on all the luxuries in life and live in a tent like she did the night before. She was already missing the beautiful valley.
The group reached Leh, and put their bodies to rest at their hotel. Everyone was full of enthusiasm and eagerness as the most special part of the trip was not far now – Pangong Tso was not far now.
To Pangong Tso
The day did not start the way it was planned to. The group was scheduled to start their journey at 9 in the morning, but due to some unanticipated events, they could not leave until 12:30. Upon reaching Chang La, they found out some guys had fainted due to the lack of oxygen. “We halted and helped those guys. It was the first time I had extended medical help to someone outside the hospital. It felt good,” tells Rithika.
She further adds, “During the ride from Chang La to Pangong Tso, the low temperatures were sending chills to our bones. It took us more than usual time to cover the stretch. But what awaited us ahead was worth all the pain.”
Reaching Pangong Tso and standing by its azure pristine waters with majestic mountains in the backdrop was the kind of moment none of them had ever lived before. The sight of the lake and the feeling of being there was something magical. Everyone posed to get clicked with the lake for background. After capturing a lot of pictures and making numerous lifelong memories, the group, tired with all the strenuous riding, took a sound sleep in their tents that night.
Leh Once More
After spending some unforgettable moments at Pangong Tso, the travellers left for Leh. The long rides in low-oxygen conditions had tired them all, and they wanted to reach Leh soon and spend the day chilling.
Rithika shares, “Tarun came to meet us after we reached our hotel at Leh. He arranged bonfire for us. It was my cousin’s birthday the following day, so we all, including the fellow travellers, partied and the birthday girl cut the cake. What a grand way to celebrate a birthday and what an exciting end of the trip!”
Highlights
When asked about the highlights of the trip, Rithika tells us, “I am extremely pleased with the warm hospitality that was extended to us throughout the trip by Tarun (Thrillophilia Representative), Tashi Bhai (Driver) and Tsewang (Trip Leader). They ensured that we had everything we needed.
“As to the destination, Ladakh is beautiful and each and every moments I spent there is going to stay with me forever. The landscapes, the fun we had, the friends we made – it was a perfect trip.”
After having the time of her life in Ladakh with her cousins, Rithika is looking forward to travel to Spain with her cousins.
