A Group Outing In Ladakh: Priyanka’s Account Of Conquering Mountains
Quick Jumplinks to Navigate
“It’s really important to have balance, spend time in nature, go to a few parties, enjoy my friends and chill out”
Joakim Noah’s words on travel and friends describe the amazing journey of Priyanka, who went to Ladakh with her friends and refused to bow down to the monotonous life.
Mumbai-based Priyanka Saboo is all giggles and chirps around her friends, and when it wals time for her to hit the mountains, she knew that the endeavour would be incomplete without her friends. A postgraduate in Designing, Priyanka loves to break free from the monotonous life, travel to new places and garner experiences of a lifetime. In a successful bid to do so, she has travelled to places like Goa, Bangalore, Coorg, Rishikesh, Bali and Singapore to name a few. However, the bucket list looked incomplete without a sojourn in the Himalayas, and the decision to visit Ladakh with her four friends just served as an icing on the cake. She booked a trip with Thrillophilia and went out for a trip of a lifetime with her friends.
It was the diversity of the land that prompted her to choose the land of high passes Ladakh as her next destination. The landscape which offered exotic flora and fauna, snow-clad mountains to green valleys, perennially gushing rivers to dead-cold deserts was just another reason why Ladakh was by far the most adventurous place to visit.

The five friends set off in a bus from Delhi to reach Manali early the next morning. After a filling breakfast, they took to Mall Road to shop and explore the Himachali culture. While Manali kept them hooked with the delicacies, the journey was yet to begin! They left for Jispa in a car, exploring the popular Rohtang Pass and Ravi Nala, where snow walls 20-feet high decorated their path on both the sides, enthralling them. The temperature in Jispa was freezing cold, and their tents were pitched right near the river, giving them an experience of being in nature’s lap. The cold weather turned Priyanka’s nails pink, indicating how chilling the weather was.
The night was a memorable one as they walked into a stream and sat on the rocks as water kissed their knees—all this as a million stars shone bright at them. It was the much-needed tranquil experience before they start their adventurous march towards Leh the next day.
The journey to Leh had a lot on offer—from scenic surroundings to popular tourist places. While Suraj Tal, the crystal clear lake enchanted them, the dramatically changing landscape ensured that the friends remain hooked all their journey. Crossing Tanglang La was a feat as the biting cold and thin air made breathing difficult, yet it did not deter the friends from savouring their moments at the mighty pass, which is the second highest in Ladakh. On arriving in Leh, it was all about acclimatising to the climate and waiting for the next day, which had in store some exciting city exploration.

A Pinch of Patriotism and Divinity alongside Adventure
It was a new morning in a new place, and the friends were excited to go on an excursion to live the culture of the people living in Leh. They visited the Hall of Fame, which took them on an unparalleled ride on the heritage front. Priyanka remembers getting patriotic here as she hummed “Ae Watan” all along while she was taken down the memory lane.
Next on the cards was experiencing the epitome of spirituality in the holy Pathar Sahib Gurudwara. Priyanka had heard a lot about the devotion and selflessness of Sikhs, but it was her first first-account experience of the same. Feeding on the Langar was an altogether different experience. However, it was the tranquillity and spirituality in the air that the friends felt here made them fall in love with the place.
Next up on the list was Spituk Monastery, a place which speaks volumes of the rich heritage of Buddhist culture. The views, as Priyanka recalls, from the top of the monastery were incomparably serene. Munching on to another sandwich meal was the ideal way to conclude the city excursion. Since it was a reviving day, the friends could plan their upcoming journey, coupled with sharing moments of laughter and joy back in the hotel that night.
The morning was rejuvenating, and Priyanka and her friends were geared up to reach Nubra Valley. Reaching the mighty Khardung La en route to Nubra was a memorable experience as the friends stepped out of the car to click pictures at the high pass, giving them a top-of-the-world feeling, literally. The surroundings were snowy and the friends could not hold themselves back from playing with the snow. It brought them back to childhood as being close to nature mattered more than ever now.
The snowy surroundings drastically changed to sand dunes as the friends found themselves in the middle of Hundar! While the sight of the double-humped camel amazed Priyanka, a ride on the ATV made Hundar an unforgettable experience for her as the white desert embraced them with adventurous activities in its chilling cold. The night spent here comprised card games and joyous moments as the power went off after 7.30 p.m.

Fun by the Pangong
After an exciting night back in Nubra, the friends headed to the salt water lake of Ladakh, Pangong Tso, the next day. The air here was filled with divinity as the lake waters changed its hues, splashing majesty all around. The pristine blue waters against the backdrop of mountains was a sight to behold! After a photography session by the lake, they headed to the local school where the movie “3 Idiots” was shot. Interacting with the locals and getting to explore their culture was a memorable experience.
The friends headed to Leh the next day and explored the markets there. The markets, adorned by silver jewellery and handicrafts, succeeded in charming the friends. Priyanka, who has a liking for silver jewellery, was so impressed with it that she bought it for herself. Strolling in the streets of Leh was an incomparable experience — the purity of air, the bustling yet calm streets and unimaginably warm people left an impression on the friends.
It was a much-needed sojourn for Priyanka out of her routine life, and she will remember it for a long, long time.
