Vessel Overview

The Vessel is an extraordinary centrepiece of Hudson, Manhattan and is a spiral staircase, which was opened to the public in 2019. It is a brainchild of Thomas Heatherwick who planned the interactive artwork of the attraction.

It was built with the purpose of giving people new perspectives of the city from different heights, angles and vantage points. The futuristic staircase has 154 flights of stairs with a total of around 2500 steps. The flight of stairs are linked together with 80 landings. The attraction is one of the largest private real estate development projects in US history and is a soaring new landmark. The vertical climb of this staircase offers a spectacular view of the city, the river and beyond.

  • By Bus: Take a bus to 34 St-Hudson Yards which is 200 yards away from the place. You can reach the location from the bus station with a 3-minute walk
  • By Subway: Take a subway to 34 St-Penn Station which is 1.5 mi away from the attraction. You can reach the location from the train station with an 8-minute car ride.
  • By Train: Take a train to 34 St-Penn Station which is 1.5 mi away from the attraction. You can reach the location from the train station with an 8-minute car ride.

Visitor tips

  • The Vessel is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm and on Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm.
  • You will be able to visit this attraction for free.
  • There is no time limit on how much time you can spend on the vessel and you can stay as long as you like.
  • If you want to climb to the top of the Vessel, stopping in between to enjoy views, it will take you around 30 to 45 minutes to climb up and then come down.
  • To climb on the Vessel, you must visit either in pairs or in a small group.
  • For those visiting the Vessel alone, one of the Vessel staff members will accompany you during your visit.
