PUERTA DE ALCALA

One of the most iconic landmarks in the city, Puerta De Alcalá is an arch located at Independence square near the main entrance of El Retiro. Opened in 1778, the gate was made by an Italian architect Francesco Sabatini, commissioned by King Charles III. The gate is known for its neoclassical style which is influenced by Roman triumphal arches.

The Puerta De Alcalá is a door which has been restored 5 times since the original construction and is known to be the first arches constructed in Europe after the Roman empire fell. It is also said that the gate was once used as a secret route for the migration of livestock in earlier centuries. The door was damaged in the Spanish civil war and was hit by a lot of bullets which can be still seen today on the door. The gate is 19.5 meters tall, has five arches with many ornamental statues created by the architect. These statues are known to represent prudence, justice, restraint, and courage. The gate is also known to host many events where famous performers like Katy Perry, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Linkin Park have performed at the gate. In 1986, there was also a song dedicated to the gate by two very famous Spanish singers, and was an instant hit.
