BUEN RETIRO PARK

A UNESCO world heritage site, Buen Retiro Park is one of the most popular parks in the city and was first opened in 1868. Also known as Parque del Buen Retiro. the park is spread across 118 hectares and is located in the center of the city. The park was also once home to a zoo and was called a house of wild animals. The zoo had many animals such as leopards, hyenas, polar bears, and elephants.

Built-in the 17th century, the park was partially destroyed suing the independence war and was again rebuilt to recover its charm. One of the most famous attractions here is the massive monument to King Alfonso XII which is surrounded by the lake located on the east of the park. You can also witness the equestrian statue which was created by Spanish sculptor Mariano Benlliure. The garden is home to a beautiful artificial lake where you can indulge in rowboats and explore the “Estanque". The garden is also home to the crystal palace which was built in 1887 and is known to have many contemporary exhibitions. The park also has an art gallery where you can witness temporary exhibitions held throughout the year.
