About Placa de Sant Jaume

Located in the heart of the city’s Gothic Quarter, Plaça de Sant Jaume also serves as the political and social center of Barcelona. It is home to the Barcelona City Council as well as the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya, which are two of the most important institutional buildings in all Catalonia. The square is also a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

On warm days, the square is filled with people sitting on the steps of the City Hall here, enjoying the sunshine and people-watching. This place also serves as a link to other popular destinations and attractions in the city, including the Barcelona Cathedral, the Rambla, El Born as well as the Mercat de la Boqueria, in addition to other places.

This popular esplanade is always abuzz with a myriad of activities, events, and festivals, including the Mercè festival, Festes de Santa Eulàlia as well as on Christmas. You can also find a statue of Christopher Columbus here.
