MONTJUIC CASTLE BARCELONA

Situated on the summit of Montjuic Mountain, the Montjuic Castle is one of the most picturesque sites to visit in Barcelona. Located about 173 meters above sea level, this castle offers 360-degree views of the entire Barcelona city. The Montjuic Castle’s first fortress was built in around 1640, making it a historically significant monument.

The foundation of the well-known tourist attraction, Montjuic Castle was laid in the year 1640, and was later remodelled during the 18th century. The rebuilding of this monument was undertaken by Juan Martin Cermeno as the site had suffered damages due to the Spanish Succession war, between 1701 to 1714. Upon entering the Montjuic Castle, you not only get to explore around this architectural wonder, but also get to discover several attractions present there. View the entrance bridge and the facade, which was designed in 1751 by Cermeno, in a neoclassical style. Moreover, further explore the bastions, which were used to protect the fort walls, and the parade grounds, which is one of the most exquisite parts, and is the highest section of the Montjuic Castle.

Visit the terrace and the watchtower, from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city of Barcelona. Do not forget to explore the sea-facing wall of the Montjuic Castle, which is 155 metres in length, and provides a serene view of the sea. Some other popular attractions to view here include the hornwork and the ravelin, the moat, the lunettes, both seaward and landward, and the courtyard. Since the opening times of the Castle vary according to the season, it is recommended to schedule your visit online, in advance, to avoid hassle and any last-minute confusion.
