La Cité Médiévale Overview

La Cité Médiévale is one of the beautiful fortresses in the southern crown of France. This medieval gem features the tales of Lady Carcas who fought hard to protect Carcassonne in the 8th century and the 13th-century stained glass windows in the St Nazaire Basilica. The visitors can take a stroll along the city walls to witness the beauty of the Roman towers and relish the panoramic views with the rolling hills in the backdrop

La Cité Médiévale is an architectural ensemble of exceptional quality that has been provided with ample and elaborative yet defensive systems over the centuries. It is one of the most remarkable places to visit in Carcassonne that showcases the architectural significance of the great historical role played by the city in Languedoc during the Middle Ages. The differences that you can see in the appearance of the fortifications are presented by their different historical origins.

Tourists are mesmerized to see the grandiosity and the different aspects of the tower in terms of shape and size in La Cité Médiévale. The east side of the city is the Porte Narbonnaise which is only accessible to vehicles. Reconstituted by the Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, the city is entirely enveloped with two walls, stretching across 1672 and 1287 meters, respectively. Occupying a mound of approximately 7 hectares, the construction of the fortification is attributed to its strategic location
