Hospital los Venerables Overview

Founded by Justino de Neve, Hospital Los Venerables is a famous 17th-century building in Seville, Spain, which served as a residence of monks and priests. Presently, it is dedicated to Diego Velázquez, a famous Spanish painter. The place features a number of exclusive art pieces by Velázquez, along with other artists whose art is placed here including Murillo, Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, and Francisco Pacheco.

Hospital Los Venerables, also known as Hospital de Venerables Sacerdotes or Hospital of Venerable Priests, is a 17th-century building constructed back in 1675. This building was constructed by two famous architects, namely Juan Domínguez & Leonardo de Figueroa.

Hospital Los Venerables is an exhibition centre and a charitable hospital. Today, it is regarded as the residence of several priests who offer their prayers in several religious spots in Seville. The place also houses a prominent Velázquez Center, constructed in remembrance of Diego Velázquez, a famous Spanish painter. 

Sevilla, or the Brotherhood of Silence, decided to offer for disabled, poor and elderly priests in 1627. They decided to rent an apartment where these persists reside under one hood. Later in 1673, a new shelter was constructed with a similar aim called Hospital Los Venerables. The hospital was founded in 1675 by Canon Justino de Neve, but later in 1687, a famous architect Leonardo de Figueroa took over this project. 

The building was finally completed in 1697. Years later, in 1840, this hospital was transformed into a textile factory. As you enter the building’s premises, several fountains and circular steps are embellished with tinted tiles. These tiles were decorated by Melchor Moreno.
