Gundert Bungalow is located in the scenic town of Thalassery in Kerala's Kannur district. It is a monument to the region's rich cultural and linguistic heritage. It was built in 1839 by Dr. Hermann Gundert, a German missionary and scholar. It is here where Dr. Gundert compiled the first Malayalam dictionary. He even translated the Bible into Malayalam in this bungalow.

How To Reach

  • By Road: Gundert Bungalow is easily accessible from different parts of Thalassery. It is located 5.9 kilometres from the Chonadam area in the town's centre. 
  • By Bus: Take a bus from the Thalassery Bus Stand and get down at Venus Corner (on the Kannur Route) in Koduvally. From here, the bungalow is 650 metres away. After getting down at the bus stop, take an auto to the top of the Illikkunnu hill, where the bungalow is located. 
  • By Car: If you are coming from Kannur, take the NH 66 route towards Thalassery. The drive is scenic, running parallel to the coast. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to cover 21.1 kilometres. There’s parking near the bungalow, making it convenient for those driving down.

  • Best Day of the Week: Although open Tuesday to Sunday, visiting on a weekday ensures a quieter experience. Weekdays are less crowded, letting you comfortably explore the bungalow and its exhibits.
