Galapata Vihara Overview

Galapata Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple situated close to the River Bentota in Sri Lanka. From the pathway to the stone archway, most of the temple has been carved from rock. The temple is known for holding Lord Buddha’s third disciple’s tooth relic, which is buried in the Stupa.

Among other Best Places to Visit in Bentota, Galapata Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple situated near the Bentara river. The main temple building displays numerous bright and colorful statues, and you will also find a 25-foot long statue of a sleeping Buddha.

You will also find two monolithic rock pillars at the entrance of the arched doorway. The pillars are well-decorated with elaborated motifs of legendary Himalayan flowers. The temple has vast significance in the lives of the Sri Lankan people as it holds the tooth relic of the third disciple of Lord Buddha
