About Columbus Monument

Located at the centre of Barcelona’s busy Plaça de les Drassanes, at the southernmost end of La Rambla, the Columbus Monument is a towering column which was built in the year 1888. It was built to celebrate Columbus’ first voyage to the Americas. The statue of Columbus at the top of the monument points towards the New World, while the four lions at the base symbolize the strength and power of the Spanish monarchy. The statue of Columbus was designed and sculpted by Rafael Atché, and depicts the explorer pointing towards the New World with his right hand. He is also shown holding a scroll in his left hand.

Popularly known as Mirador de Colom, the monument stands tall with a height of 60 meters, with the statue of Columbus located at the very top, and pointing out towards the sea. You can find a lift at the base of the tower, which will take you all the way to its top, from where you can soak in some of the most panoramic views of the entire port area as well as that of La Rambla. The Columbus Monument is one of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions, and the view from the top is not to be missed!
