This high altitude lake gorgeously set amid the twin peaks of the Apharwat Mountains is one of the best attractions in Gulmarg. It is also popularly known as the Frozen Lake owing to its completely frozen state half the year from November to June. When in Gulmarg, you will need to keep a day aside in your itinerary for a trip to Alpather Lake as it requires a whole day’s trek starting from Gulmarg and covering a distance of about 13 km. 

The lake is an absolute must-visit for trekking enthusiasts consisting of a one-day trekking expedition from Gulmarg to Alpather Lake. The trek is moderately difficult and you will need to follow the route starting from Gulmarg, Khilanmarg to Apharwat Ridge and then to Alpather Lake. 

During the winter season, the lake is a sight to behold with a sheer frozen glassy top and ducks walking on them instead of wading. On the other hand, if you are here during the summers, you will have a completely different sight welcoming you with beautiful mountain blossoms and trees covering the surrounding areas. The most attractive aspect of the lake lies in not just the beauty of the lake itself but also the entire journey you undertake to reach it.
