Located one-and-a-half miles from Fisherman's Wharf, the Alcatraz island gained importance as a military fort and then as a federal penitentiary housing some of the notorious convicts. Although the prison had a capacity of housing 450 convicts, no more than 250 prisoners had occupied the island. Some of the well-known convicts who had been imprisoned here are Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud and Machine Gun Kelly.
Take a tour of the island to go inside the cell house where prisoners used to stay inside claustrophobic (9 x 5-foot) cells. The best way to explore the island is to take an Alcatraz Day Tour which is available hourly from 8:40 am to 3:50 pm. It is a 2 ½ hours tour and will take you inside the Alcatraz prison cellhouse. During the tour, you will be stepping back in time to experience the island which has served as a Civil War fort, military prison and also has been a notorious federal penitentiary in the US at one point in time.
Experience the night scene of the island by embarking on a night tour. You will be able to take this tour from Tuesday to Saturday at 5:55 pm, 6:30 pm and 7:05 pm. This tour includes the exploration of the various attractions of the island as well as some special activities. During the 2 ½ hour tour, you will be taken on a personally narrated boat tour around the island and will be given a guided tour from the dock to the main prison building.
The Cellhouse is the main attraction on Alcatraz and is the main prison building. It is a three-story cell house with four cell blocks. You will be able to explore the notorious prison facilities which had the capacity of housing 450 convicts but had a maximum of 250 prisoners at a given time. Learn about the daily life of the prisoners and the guards while exploring the place.
The Alcatraz lighthouse was the first U.S. West Coast lighthouse and was operated manually without electricity till 1909. In 1909, during the construction of the cell house, the lighthouse tower was replaced and the current one which you will be able to see is located at the highest point of the island. The new lighthouse tower is 84 feet tall and will offer you a spectacular view of San Francisco Bay.
