Bir Billing – The Paragliding Capital of India

Bir Billing is situated in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Valley and is known as the Paragliding Capital of India. The scenic surroundings, favourable weather, and view of the Dhauladhar mountain range add to the world-class experience of paragliding. Billing, perched at 2,400 meters, is where the flight begins. Bir, at 1,525 meters, is where you land — and everything in between is pure magic. These high altitudes make it the perfect spot for paragliding with favourable conditions for flying over lush forests, Tibetan monasteries, and rolling valleys.

Bir Billing is unique because of its steady thermals, consistent winds, and active flying community. The 2015 Paragliding World Cup, held in Bir, brought it international attention and drew pilots from all over the world, including novices. For both novice and experienced pilots, Bir Billing is among the greatest locations in the world to try paragliding because it is set up to provide an unmatched flying experience.

Best Time for Paragliding in Bir Billing

Paragliding may be a year-round activity in Bir Billing ,but there are some seasons that have been carefully chosen to provide the visitors the best paragliding experience of their lifetime.

While Bir Billing offers paragliding almost year-round, the best seasons to fly are carefully chosen based on weather patterns, thermal activity, and visibility.

1. Autumn (Mid-September to November) — Primary Flying Season

  • Temperatures: 10°C to 20°C
  • This is considered the peak flying season. The skies are with a level wind speed. This makes it easier to manage long flights and enjoy panoramic views of the snow-capped Dhauladhars.

2. Spring (March to Early June) — Another Excellent Window

  • Temperature: 12°C to 25°C
  • The weather during spring is pleasant, with the valleys blossoming, making it a beautiful time for flying. The thermals are reliable, and there’s less crowd compared to autumn.

3. Winter (Late November to February) — Chilly but Flyable

  • Temperature: 0°C to 15°C
  • It is possible to fly during the winter months. However, the weather conditions and the wind speed are unpredictable. Early mornings are often foggy, and snow may limit access to Billing, which is the takeoff point. Usually, experienced pilots prefer this time for paragliding.

4. Monsoon (Late June to August) — Off-Season

  • Temperature: 18°C to 25°C
  • Flying during this season is not considered safe due to unpreicability of the weather. Constant rainfalls, cloudy skies, and high wind speeds are the main reasons for the unfavourable weather. The activity is suspended by most paragliding operators due to the risky circumstances during this period.

Tip: If you are planning to go paragliding, head to Bir Billing in October or April for the perfect weather, very few people, and ideal flying conditions.
