Kuirau Park

Legends have that a beautiful woman named Kuirau was bathing in the lake waters when she was dragged by a taniwha (mythical demigod) to his lair under the lake. The incident invited the wrath of the gods and as a result they made the lake waters boil so the demigod would be destroyed forever. From that time onward eruptions occur from time to time making the lake water bubble.
