Places to Visit on Punakha Trip

Here are some of the best places to visit in Punakha

1. Punakha Dzong: Punakha Dzong is also known as Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang which means "the Palace of Great Happiness". This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a miss-visit and must be included in all the Punakha tour packages. The palace is situated cozily between the Pho Chhu (Male) and Mo Chhu (Female) rivers in the Punakha valley amidst a scenic mountainous background. This six-storeyed dzong is the second-oldest dzong in Bhutan and houses the sacred relics of Rangjung Kharsapani, Ngawang Namgyal and the tertön Pema Lingpa. Domche, the annual festival held here, is extremely famous among the locals.

2. Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten: Built overlooking the picturesque Punakha Valley with majestic mountains in the backdrop, this stupa in Bhutan was built to remove the evil spirits in Bhutan and to bring peace to the world. This four-storey, pagoda-style stupa is dedicated to several wrathful deities - the 15-feet-tall statue of Vajrakilaya being the most prominent deity here. The golden statue of Sakyamuni Buddha on the rooftop floor is another key deity in this stupa. Tourists who have booked Punakha tour packages can visit this stupa by embarking on a one-hour hike from Punakha town. The suspension bridge enroute the trail offers an exhilarating experience.

3. Jigme Dorji National Park: Jigme Dorji National Park, located in Bhutan, spans over 4,349 square kilometers of breathtaking landscapes, encompassing alpine meadows, dense forests, and diverse wildlife. Established in 1974, it is the country's largest protected area, named after the revered third king. The park is a haven for endangered species like the snow leopard and red panda. Its pristine environment also preserves cultural sites, making it a harmonious blend of nature and Bhutanese heritage.

4. Mo Chhu: "Mo" in Bhutanese language translates to " female " and "Chhu '' means "water or river". Mo Chhu is one of the major rivers in Bhutan that starts from the Himalayan mountains in the Gasa Dzongkhag district near Tibet and Bhutan border. The river is popular for river rafting and kayaking activities that can be booked with Punakha packages. The Class 1 and Class II rapids of the river are ideal even for beginners. During river rafting, one can marvel at the surrounding scenery and catch a glimpse of the Punakha Dzong. The river passes through the Mo Chuu valley and also cuts through the rice paddies as well as the domes of the Namgyal Chorten.

5. Chimi Lhakhang: Perched cozily on a round hilltop in the Punakha district of Bhutan, this Buddhist temple is believed to bless visitors with fertility. Many people visit this place to seek the blessings of Lama Drukpa Kunley or 'The Divine Madman', a Tibetan monk who came to Bhutan in the 15th century and to get blessed with a child. The temple was built in 1499 and is considered one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples that you can visit as a part of the Punakha tour packages.

6. Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang: Located on the summit of a 1550 meter hilltop in Walakha region of Bhutan, Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang is a Bhusshist college for nuns that you can visit as a part of your curated Punakha packages. The 14-feet bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara housed here was handmade by local Bhutanese artisans and is also believed to be the biggest Avalokiteshvara statue in Bhutan. The nunnery is surrounded by thick pine forests and spiritual vibes fill the air. The temple also conducts meditation programs for visitors.

A well-laid hiking trail amidst tall trees takes you to the chorten. Once atop, you can soak in the spiritual aura and the mesmerizing views of the place.

2. Walk to Chimi Lhakhang Temple: Another interesting activity that you can include in the Punakha packages is a walk to the Chimi Lhakhang Temple that is believed to bless its visitors with fertility. It takes about 20-30 minutes on a bright sunny day.

3.
