Porbandar

Experiential journeys will make you a storyteller
About Porbandar
The birthplace of the father of the nation, Porbandar, is a chief tourist attraction in Gujarat. Besides being the hometown of Mahatma Gandhi, it was also the birthplace of the Hindu religious figure Sudama, who was the best friend of Lord Krishna.

Like the rest of Gujarat, Porbandar experiences a semi arid climate, being the most suitable for travel from October to March.
The early history of the city suggests Harappan settlements over the region, the pieces of evidence of which are still visible throughout. During the British rule in India, the area was a princely state and witnessed the construction of several monuments, all of which act as tourist attractions today.

A visit to Porbandar is incomplete without an exploration of the Kirti Mahal, the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Sayaji Rao, a local ruler, built this memorial in 1936 to commemorate Gandhi's birth. Other places dedicated to Gandhi and his struggle for independence include the Bharat Mandir and the Rana Bapu’s Mahal. If you are looking for a scientific education while on your trip, explore the Tara Mandir planetarium of Porbandar, where you can watch different shows about the solar system and learn about new scientific developments in astrology.

Do not forget to visit the Shri Sudama Ji Mandir and the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram. While the former is a Hindu temple, the Ramakrishna Mission ashram was residence to freedom activist Swami Vivekananda for four months.
Visit the Porbandar bird sanctuary and the Barda Hills wildlife sanctuary for getting closer to nature. Both these places contain vibrant varieties of Indian flora and fauna. You can photograph birds like teals, fowls, flamingos, and ibis and explore the diverse wildlife of the Gujarati forests.

One of the best activities organized in the city is the annual Janmashtami mela. This fair is a celebration of local culture and customs. You can enjoy mouthwatering dishes like Thepla and chilla here while also taking thrilling rides on swings. Shopping for beads, jewelry, spices, and handicrafts in the local markets is also sure to resolve your shopping woes.
