After 1949, Guilin was perhaps the first city of China to develop tourism. For decades, the textbooks of children had only one name whenever there was a mention of the best landscape under heaven and that was Guilin. It happened to be the darling of the Chinese politicians and was the star city which was proudly presented for a visit by the dignitaries. At present, the natural endowments of the city will still mesmerize however given the impact of imperfect urban planning, you will have this pervasive feeling that the city is now past its prime.

No matter which part of Guilin you are out exploring, you are more or less likely to spend a night or two here. It is one of the most comfortable and relaxing place to plan a trip to the rest of the province. The city is chic, modern and clean which a high percentage of English speaking locals so communication here will never be a hassle. Travel Advice

·         If you are visiting a holy temple or any other religious place that does not approve of the short dresses, it is better to avoid the same.

·         Be wary of the touts.

·         Do not get involved in any type of fights with the locals.

·         Make sure you learn some words from the local language. This will help you interact with the locals. It also gives the locals a feeling that you have taken some measure to learn about their culture and tradition.

·         Do not flaunt your valuables or cash in the public places.

·         If you rent a vehicle, make sure you adhere to the requisite traffic rules.

·         Always carry at least one identity proof with you.

·         Make sure you have kept your passport safely all round the trip. To be on the safer side, you can also make photocopies of the same. 

·         Do not let anyone deceive you. It is a good idea to learn about the destination you are traveling to before actually going there.

·         Always book pre paid taxis. In case you aren’t able to get prepaid taxis make sure you negotiate the fare before booking the vehicle.

·         Do not photograph in the area where it is prohibited.

Li River: Those who want to be in the midst of nature must spend their days by the side of Li River. It is one of the most beautiful river you will ever see. You will get a hint of how amazing the river looks while driving towards it through Yangshuo, there are Karst mountains and small river sight that line up the whole Li River cruise. It is also a great place if you want to indulge in activities like hiking, river rafting and fishing.

Reed Flute Cave:
The Reed Flute Cave is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Guilin. It is a colorful stalactite cave in which you can also take tours. The cave is decorated with multi colored lighting which makes it look even more attractive. It has been a famous place in the city since more than 1200 years now. The natural limestone cave has so much to offer that you must definitely put it in your must-visit list.

Elephant Trunk Hill: We have all seen natural elements in the shape of living things and the Elephant Trunk Hill is exactly that. It is a massive elephant-shaped hill which is located alongside water and it makes the hill look as if an elephant is drinking water. The landmark is known as the symbol of the city and receives many visitors as you will not find a hill of a similar kind anywhere else in the world.

Lingqu Canal: 
The Lingqu Canal is regarded as a World heritage center by UNESCO. After this announcement, a huge number of tourists started visiting the place as they had newly discovered it. It is a 34.6 km long canal that connects two major rivers in Guilin – Xiang River and Li River. It has become a popular tourist attraction because of its extraordinary design philosophy and the way it is built to channel the water.

Seven Star Park: 
The Seven Star Park is named in such a way because it has seven different hills inside them. Nature lovers will have a great time here as they can go on a trail as well as stroll through the various parks out here. The complete area is full of greenery and makes for a beautiful scenic sight. It is a calm and soothing experience to be at the Seven Star Park and just relax in midst of the nature there.

Jingjiang Princes' City: 
For those who like to visit all the historical spots of a place must get to the Jingjiang Princes' City in Guilin. It is a city from the 14th century where Ming princes used to live in the past era. It is a major tourist attraction in the city and surprisingly the place also functions as the Guangxi Normal University. The architecture of the place is in traditional Chinese style which is another strong reason why you might want to visit the place.

If you have never been to a rice field before don’t miss this opportunity as the city boasts of some magnificent fields that look just amazing. Enjoy the Nightlife on the West Street: 
We all love to enjoy the nightlife and the best part is every city has its own nightlife culture. Guilin has an active nightlife as there are various bars and pubs open throughout the night. If you want to make the most out of your night at Guilin, visit the West Street, it is said that the place attracts the most number of foreigners in the city. You can go around shopping for souvenirs in the West Street while you are enjoying your night.

Catch River Night Show: 
As we saw the various activities that one can do in Li River, another spectacular thing about the river is that it also hosts night shows which are worth watching. You will see colorful lights all throughout the place, various musical shows and folk events also happen here during the night. One of the reasons why these shows happen at night is that it just looks beautiful with all the added glamour of the night time and the colorful lights.

Indulge in the local activities: 
Trying out the local activities for which a particular place is famous for is an enriching experience in itself. In Longji, there are various spots where you can be a part of the local activities that define the place. You can try out making oil tea which the locals can teach you. If you are interested in cooking something up in an unusual way, cook rice with the help of Bamboo tubes. You can also learn doing embroidery from the Yao women here, they are quite friendly and if you want to learn something while on your holiday, they will help you do it.
