About Eldoret

Eldoret is one of the fastest growing towns of Kenya. Nestled south of the Cherangani Hills in the verdant landscape, it is one of African paradises where everything you see has the touch of natural beauty still unadulterated by the intruding modernity. Presently, Eldoret is a thriving service town sprawling Kenya Uganda highway. The name of the town comes from Maasai word ‘eldore’ which means stony river. You can also spot an exact parallel in the very source of this inspiration, River Sosiani. ·         Street food here is fantastic. However, there maybe few stalls that do not give proper attention to the quality of preparation. So, before you order for food at any of the street stalls, check for the quality before buying.

Naiberi Campsite

Eldoret is a famous tourist destination in western Kenya which has several interesting attractions. You cannot skip the opportunity to visit the beautiful Naiberi Campsite which is situated at a distance of 16 km from Eldoret. If you are travelling in a group, then do plan a stay at this amazing campsite. The camping experience would surely help you uncover several mysteries of Africa. At Naiberi River Camp, the visitors are offered with an option to select the accommodation of their choice. Kerio Valley

The silent Kerio Valley lies between the Tugen Hills and Cherangani Hills. The Elgeyo Escarpment shoots to a height more than 1,830 meters (6,000 ft) at some places. Kerio Valley holds a depth of 4,000 feet (1,200 m) which is indeed scary. This destination is one of the top tourist places in Eldoret which is managed in a pristine natural setup. You can examine the semi-tropical vegetation present on the slopes, while the valley base or floor is layered with dry thorn bushes. Tourists must keep a note that the best time of the year to visit Kerio Valley is during July and August. You will be stuck at the various mind boggling views which are rare to find anywhere else. The rains end during those months and the temperature also shows a slight dip, making the surrounding quite pleasant and relaxing. This region also houses a national reserve which was built in 1983 for preserving a wide variety of flora & fauna. The most appealing factor of Kerio Valley is the scenery.


Kerio Valley National Reserve

The Kerio Valley National Reserve is perfect for sightseeing The reserve is home to a population of 200 elephants which are mainly spotted around the unreachable Lake Kamnarok. Tourists can hire a guide through the KWS Rimoi Game Reserve you will help you acquire a perfect view of the elephants. Kerio Valley National Reserve lies on the west section of the crocodile-infested Kerio River; whereas, the east side is tagged as the area for Lake Kamnarok National Reserve. You will be stunned by the dramatic scenery available in different portions of this reserve. Moreover, the existence of a vast birdlife is one of the major attractions for tourists. Earlier, there were hardly any facilities, but visitors were allowed to camp in the bush close to Lake Kamnarok.  After the establishment of the reserve, there has been a significant rise in the wildlife population, mainly for the count of elephants. Ngala Falls

This landmark is tagged as an adventure site which is located close to the Eldoret International Airport. You will cherish a visit to Ngala Falls which offers a picturesque image. Poa Place Resort

It was opened in 2008 and since then Poa Place has transformed into a family spot to chill and relax. Elgon View

Elgon View is basically a suburb that is situated on the southern section of Eldoret. This region was named after Mt Elgon. The area has been allocated primarily for residential housing but under less density. This is one of the popular resorts for tourists because it houses all the top notch politicians, businessmen, athletes and religious leaders. There are various institutions in the area such as Eldoret State Lodge, Eldoret Club, the Eldoret Sports Club, Mother of Apostles Seminary High School, Hill Primary and secondary schools and Testimony primary and secondary schools. Some of the renowned residents of Elgon View are Ibrahim Hussein (runner), Geoffrey Mutai, David Rudisha and Kipchoge Keino.

Cheese Factory

Eldoret is a blooming service town located on the Kenya-Uganda highway. Travelers have to give time so as to spot a number of interesting locations as well as activities in the town. One of the main highlights of Eldoret is the DoinyoLessos Creameries Cheese Factory. A major population of tourist prefers visiting this wonderful factory which stocks up around 20 different versions of cheese. Visiting this factory can be a great thing to do.

Some of the well-known clubs in Eldoret are Black Bamboo Lounge, Spree Discotheque, and Club Signature.


Kerio Valley Hiking


For adventure enthusiasts, there are hiking trails available in Eldoret which covers the Kerio Valley. You can access short walks to steeper routes as per your will. The valley has a depth of 1200 m/4000 ft., while the floor is covered with thorny bushes. The hike can last somewhere between 2-3 hours. If you are in search for a more challenging option, then try the ‘Valley & back” hike that requires a high level of fitness. Tourists must make sure that, if the expedition is going to last more than a night, then do not forget to carry water, shelter (tent) and food. Also, one shouldn’t ignore the temperature factors during such hikes in Eldoret.
