History and Culture of Unterseen
Unterseen is known all over the world as one of the historic townships in Interlaken with the oldest traces of the Neolithic period. In the second century, a Roman graveyard was constructed here and the cemetery is the testimony to the settlement in the area.
The area was earlier known as Interlacus in the year 1133 as when on the opposite side of Aare, the Interlaken Monastery was founded. The settlement started to flourish across the Monastery in the subsequent years. It was known as Villa Inderlappen in the year 1239 whereas Civitas Inderlappen in the year 1280.
The township of Unterseen was founded on the 13th of July in the year 1279 at the time when Baron Berchtold III of Eschenbach-Oberhofen got permission from the King Rudolf I von Habsburg to construct a stronghold in the middle of the two lakes.
The name is significant for its foundation. Unter means “between” and seen means “lake.” Founded by the secular nobles of the area, the purpose of the town was to limit the growing power of the Monastery and to have a control bridge over the Aare.
