THE NEWARKE HOUSES MUSEUM

The Newarke Houses Museum recites the history of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment with a diverse collection of toys and a cinematic presentation. The museum is composed of historic houses named Skeffington House and Wygston's Chantry House. Visit this museum to follow the unique journey of local soldiers and learn about their war experiences.

The Newarke Houses Museum is situated in the center of the De Montfort University area. It has the Regimental Galleries that unfurl the rich history of Leicestershire and its soldiers. The museum was founded in 1849 and is the first public museum in the UK. It houses a 6ft teddy bear who used to be a part of the Leicester toy shop DOMINOES. Through archive film, oral histories, and computer interactives, discover the history of Newarke Houses and the surrounding historic area.

An interesting thing about the museum is that you can learn about the history of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment and the home front, which isn't available anywhere else in the world in a physical format. You'll also find a small room in the museum that illustrates the story of Daniel Lambert, Leicester's most famous native. The museum also features a fun and safe play area for the little ones.
