The Commandery holds an 800 year old history in its building which is located in the city of Worcester. The museum of the Commandery was established in 1977 in the same old building of the Commandery which was used as the Royal Headquarters during the 17th century. The different galleries of the museum put on exhibitions related to the 17th century civil war and have been listed amongst the most amazing places to go in Worcester.
The Commandery Museum documents the stories of the long fought battle of the English Civil War, the Battle of Worcester in 1651, therefore it’s solely dedicated to the civil wars. The garde I building of the museum which is one of the unique tourist places to visit in Worcester has been maintained and jointly funded by organisations like Heritage Lottery Fund and Worcester City Council. The premise of the Commandery has a church, a house, a monastic hospital, hotel and a museum.
The museum takes all the highlights of the Commandery, with its popular exhibition and displays belonging to the medieval period, the tudor period, the civil war, the georgian period and the victorian period. Therefore, inside a building is subsumed the history of the city since the mediaeval times. The foundation of the building was laid down on the order of Wulfstan, Bishop of Worcester in the 11th century, and it was built as a hospital.
