About The Butchers' Bridge

The Butchers' Bridge is a distinctive pedestrian bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia, renowned for its combination of modern architecture, artistic sculptures, and romantic symbolism. Located in the heart of the city, it spans the Ljubljanica River, connecting the central market with Petkovšek Embankment. Since its opening in 2010, the bridge has become a popular attraction for both locals and tourists.

Designed by Slovenian architect Jurij Kobe, the bridge features a sleek glass and steel structure, creating a contemporary contrast to the surrounding historic buildings. One of its most remarkable aspects is the collection of bronze sculptures by artist Jakov Brdar, depicting mythological and biblical figures such as Adam and Eve, Prometheus, and grotesque creatures representing human suffering and temptation. These sculptures add a thought-provoking artistic touch, making the bridge more than just a crossing point.

Despite its name, which originates from the nearby meat market that once stood there, the Butchers' Bridge is best known as Ljubljana’s "love bridge." Inspired by similar traditions in cities like Paris and Rome, couples affix padlocks to the bridge’s steel wires as a symbol of their everlasting love, throwing the keys into the river below. This romantic custom has made the bridge a significant landmark for lovers visiting the city.

With its striking design, rich symbolism, and beautiful riverside views, the Butchers' Bridge offers a unique cultural experience, blending history, art, and romance in the picturesque setting of Slovenia’s charming capital.
