The Surprise Cave locally known as Sung Sot Cave is the most popular attraction in Halong Bay. Spread across a vast area of 12,000 square metres, it is the largest cave in Halong Bay. The length of this cave is about 800 metres whereas the height is about 30 metres.
In contrast to the narrow entrance, this is an enormous cave that can include up to a thousand people at once. Inside the cave, you will get to see impressive stalagmites and stalactites. The beauty of the cave has been enhanced by the colourful lightings which add a dramatic touch to the cave.
Additionally, this Cave holds a major cultural significance for the localities. As you go further inside the cave, you will get to hear about the ‘Legend of Thanh Giong’. By Water: The only way to reach Surprise Cave is by water. You can take a cruise from the Bai Chay Wharf which is located around 2 km from the city centre of Halong. You can reach here in approximately 10 minutes via the Hải Quân route. From Bai Chay, you can take cruise ship no.2 which will take you directly to the Surprise Cave. You can also choose to take a private boat which is also available at the wharf. You will reach your destination in approximately 20 minutes, covering a distance of around 14 km.
Best Season: Visit the Surprise Cave between the months of February-June and September-October to experience pleasant weather.
